Arun belongs to a middle class family in Bengaluru. His father was an engineer in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and his mother was a dietician in a hospital.
He studied class 10 from St. John's High School, Bengaluru. After this he took admission in Christ University for PUC (Pre-University Course).
In college, he became friends with boys from rich families. Due to mischief in college, Arun and his group were refused to appear for the examination. Although Arun's friends were allowed to appear for the examination due to their family background, Arun was expelled.
Sell water purifiers to homes
One day in 1984, Arun read in the newspaper about a job as a door-to-door salesman in a publicity company. He immediately went for interview and coincidentally he got this job also. At a young age, when he should have been studying, Arun had to go to people's homes and sell water purifiers.
Sometimes people sent jilal from their homes and sometimes their hands got tired of knocking on doors but no one came to buy their product. Arun says that these bad experiences inspired him to succeed in life.
